Projects
1997- 2006 project "WOMAN AND LAW", in cooperation with the Helsinki Citiyens Assembly Banja Luka, with support of Kvinna till Kvinna from Sweden. As a part of this project, we are offering free legal assistance and support of psychologist and social worker. The main objective of our activities is reaching legal and psychosocial security of women through support of SOS telephone, assistance of attorney, lawyer, social worker, and psychologist aimed for securing assistance and support to our women beneficiaries to fight domestic violence.
During previous years of project implementation, we succeeded to influence on changes of numerous discriminative provisions in domestic laws, and influence adoption of important laws and public policies in the field of protection of women's human rights and gender equality.
In upcoming period, activities of the project will be directed toward support for women victims of domestic violence through legal services, SOS telephone, work of the safe house for women and children victims of violence, as well as making influence on implementation of relevant laws and public policies in this field, education and improving cooperation with women and men representatives of official institutions on local and other levels in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
1997-2006 project "WOMAN TODAY", in cooperation with the Helsinki Citizens Assembly Banjua Luka, with support of Kvinna till Kvinna Sweden. The main objective of the project is diminishing all forms of gender based discrimination and creating environment where women and men will have equal possibilities.
During previous years of project implementation, we succeeded to build good cooperation with women politicians and NGO activists throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, and influence on improving position of women in public and political life of Bosnia and Herzegovina through education, public advocacy actions, media campaigns, and public discussions on actual topics, such are constitutional reform in B&H, process of accession to the European Union, etc.
In upcoming period, activities of the project will focus on education and action researches about awareness about gender based discrimination in local official institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, work with women politicians and NGO activists in local communities, media activities, and public discussions about gender equality and position of women in public and political life in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
2005-2006 project "FROM THE LAW TO REAL GENDER EQUALITY" supported by the European Union. General aim of the project is encouraging practical implementation of the Gender Equality Law of B&H, especially provisions related to reaching equality of women and men in public and political life of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Activities of the project are following: organizing workshops about gender equality for women and men members of local branches of parliamentary political parties, and organizing public discussions and radio programs about implementation of the Gender Equality Law in B&H in the practice. Targeted local communities are Banja Luka, Kozarska Dubica, Gradiška, Prijedor, Novi Grad, Doboj, Modriča, Bijeljina, Višegrad, Trebinje and Nevesinje.
Intermediate results of the project include following: significant number of women and men members of local branches of parliamentary political parties in eleven local communities of Bosnia and Herzegovina learned about Gender Equality Law in B&H, increased gender sensibility and learned about importance of ensuring women's participation in decision making. Women members of local civil society organizations increased cooperation in work on gender equality issues with local political parties, and their participation as active partner in creation of gender sensitive polices and solving gender equality issues on local level. Improved knowledge about Gender Equality Law in B&H among women and men members of parliamentary political parties, official institutions, media, and citizens.
In upcoming period, United Women Banja Luka are planning to continue with activities of this project through education and raising awareness about importance of equal participation of women and men in public and political life, and decision making in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
2005 - 2007 project "GENDER EQUALITY IN B&H - INFORMED PUBLIC OPINION AND GENDER SENSITIVE MEDIA" in partnership with nongovernmental organization Amica e. V. from Freiburgh, Germany, with financial assistance of EED Germany.
Activities of the project are following: 11 television programs aimed for presenting specific segments of gender equality regulated by the Gender Equality Law in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and open discussion with women and men representatives of nongovernmental organizations and official institutions in B&H about implementation of the Law in the practice, education about gender equality for women and men journalists, editors and other media workers, as well as education about gender equality and media in Bosnia and Herzegovina for women politicians and women NGO activists, organizing periodical working meetings of women journalists, politicians, and NGO activists aimed for planning and organizing joint activities aimed for increasing gender sensibility of media in B&H, conducing monitoring of media in B&H, action researches, and analysis in media of B&H aimed for increasing access and influence of women on creation of media policies in B&H, organizing public discussions and local public advocacy actions directed toward increasing gender sensibility of media.
Media Projects of United Women Banja Luka in Previous Period:
1997-2006 media activities within the projects "Woman and Law" and "Woman Today" radio programs and TV discussions about topics related to the current issues of promotion democracy and civil society and strengthening women in private and public life. We are implementing these activities thanks to the financial support by the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation from Sweden.
-1998 media project "How to Live together Again?"- implemented through radio and TV programs/discussions directed toward increasing public awareness of citizens in local community about problem of existing conflict between women refugees, women returnees and women belonging to domicile population in the Banja Luka region, and better understanding of needs of living together. This project has been implemented with the support of Westminster Foundation from the United Kingdom;
-2001 media project "Democracy What Is That?"- implemented through TV programs on following topics: democracy and human rights, civil society, women and privatization, and democratization of society through development of civil sector. The project was supported by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy from the UK and its main objective was increasing public awareness about needs for active participation of citizens in democratic processes in our local community;
-2001, media project "Campaign about Women's rights and Position of Women in Society" - series of TV programs and field research directed to legal and real position of women in a society, issues of trafficking of women, domestic violence, the role of woman in public life, and priorities of the strategy for public involvement of women in B&H. The project was supported by the Maltezer Hilf Dienst, Initiative of Women in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHWI), and UNHCR;
-2002, publishing manual "Media as Your Allies - Basics of Communication With the Public Through Media" in cooperation with the Helsinki Citizens Assembly Banja Luka as the result of long time work with groups of female politicians and representatives of nongovernmental organizations, as well as their youth activists. Manual is directed toward education and empowerment for public presentation. This project has been implemented with the support of Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation from Sweden;
-2003/2004 media project "Strengthening of Public Awareness for Discrimination of Women and Gender Related Violations of Human Rights in B&H" - organization of TV programs/discussions and field survey/research about the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in Republika Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This project is been implemented in cooperation with the women's association AmicaEv Freiburgh, Germany, and thanks to the financial support from EED Germany.
United Women Banja Luka participated in writing Shadow Report on CEDAW Convention
In the period 2002/2003, United Women Banja Luka participated in writing of B&H Shadow Report on Convention on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW Convention 1979), for the part related to the violence against women and trafficking of women in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The report was prepared in cooperation with numerous nongovernmental organizations and groups throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, with support of Global Rights - Partners for Justice, Office in Sarajevo, B&H.
In December 2003, the United Women activist, human rights expert, participated in the public hearing and discussion about official B&H CEDAW Report in front of the State Commission for Gender Equality of the Parliamentary Assembly of B&H.
Shadow Report was presented by Marijana Senjak, woman NGO activist from Medica Zenica, and Diana Sehic, legal expert of Global Rights, Office in Sarajevo on 35th Session of the CEDAW Committee, held in New York, in May 2006.
